Token Counting Tips

  • 1 token ≈ 4 characters in English
  • 1 token ≈ 0.75 words
  • Code and non-English text may use more tokens
  • Different models tokenize differently — these are estimates

The AI Token Counter estimates how many tokens your text will use when you send it to a large language model — and roughly what that request will cost.

Tokens are the unit AI APIs bill on: for English text, one token is about four characters or three-quarters of a word. Paste any prompt, system message, or document and the tool shows the token count alongside character and word counts, then estimates input and output cost for the model you pick — from GPT-4o and Claude to Gemini, DeepSeek, and Llama.

Everything is calculated locally in your browser, so you can safely paste confidential prompts, source code, or customer data. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the token count?

The counter uses a multi-factor estimate (character and word based) that lands within roughly 95% of exact counts for English text — ideal for budgeting and prompt tuning. For byte-exact counts, use each provider’s official tokenizer.

Which models can I estimate costs for?

GPT-4o and the GPT-4 family, Claude 3.5 and newer, Gemini 1.5 and 2.0, DeepSeek, and Llama, with pricing kept current as providers change their rates.

Does my text leave my browser?

No. Counting happens entirely on your device. Your text is never sent to our servers or any third party, and the tool works without an account or API key.
